学子
Meaning
Student; young scholar. A literary or elevated term for a student, especially one striving for academic excellence or far from home.
More literary and elevated than 学生. Carries connotations of aspiration, diligence, and the tradition of scholarly pursuit. Frequently appears in formal speeches, news articles, scholarship citations, and literary writing. 莘莘学子 (the great multitude of students) is a common set phrase.

- 我昨天遇到一个学子 — while not grammatically wrong, 学子 in casual conversation sounds unnecessarily literary; for informal contexts use 学生 or 同学; reserve 学子 for written, formal, or ceremonial language
Origin & History
学 (study/learning) + 子 (child/person of virtue) — in classical Chinese, 子 was a respectful suffix for a learned person; 学子 thus means a person devoted to learning
