四合院
Meaning
Siheyuan; a traditional Chinese courtyard compound. A residential structure with buildings on all four sides enclosing a central courtyard.
The quintessential architectural form of traditional northern Chinese housing, especially in Beijing. The layout symbolises family hierarchy, privacy, and harmony with nature. Siheyuan are culturally significant as emblems of old Beijing life and have become valuable heritage properties. Many have been converted into boutique hotels, restaurants, or cultural spaces, while others remain family residences.
