书记
Meaning
Secretary; party secretary; (historically) a clerk or scribe.
In contemporary Chinese, almost exclusively refers to a political/party secretary within the Chinese Communist Party system — e.g. 省委书记 (provincial party secretary), 村支部书记 (village branch party secretary). Historically meant a scribe or clerical officer. Distinct from 秘书 (personal secretary/assistant in a business context). Key collocations: 党委书记 (party committee secretary); 总书记 (general secretary).

Don't Say
- 书记 to mean a business secretary or personal assistant — use 秘书 (secretary/assistant) instead; in modern Chinese, 书记 almost exclusively denotes a party/political secretary and using it in a business context would cause serious confusion
