Meaning

To tell it like it is; to speak honestly without embellishment. Saying exactly what one believes to be true.

A four-character phrase used as an adverbial expression, often at the start of a sentence, to signal that what follows is a frank, unvarnished opinion or account. It implies courage in speaking one's mind despite potential discomfort. 实话实说 was also the name of a popular Chinese talk show (崔永元主持) that aired from 1996 to 2002, further cementing the phrase in popular consciousness.

Don't Say

  • 实话实说 as a written noun phrase in formal reports — it is an adverbial phrase for oral or semi-formal contexts; in written analysis, use 客观而言 (objectively speaking) or 坦率地说 (frankly speaking) instead
