融化

Chinese HSK 7-9 Vocabulary Chinese ★★ 2/5 neutral róng huà

Hanzi breakdown 融 = 鬲 + 虫 (heat causing melting); 化 = 人 + 匕 (person transformed — change of state)

Meaning

To melt; to thaw. Describes the transition of a solid to liquid state through heat or warmth, or metaphorically, the dissolution of coldness and barriers.

Used both literally for ice, snow, and frozen substances melting, and metaphorically for emotional coldness or interpersonal barriers dissolving. Differs from 溶解 (dissolve in liquid) in that 融化 focuses on the solid-to-liquid process driven by heat or warmth.
