感慨

Chinese HSK 7-9 Vocabulary Chinese ★★ 2/5 neutral gǎn kǎi
Pinyin gǎn kǎi
Hanzi breakdown 感 = 咸 + 心 (feel, emotion); 慨 = 忄 + 既 (sigh, lament — heart radical + completion suggests reflective sorrow)

Meaning

To sigh with deep emotion; to be moved with a complex mixture of admiration, regret, or wonder. The profound emotional state of being stirred by an experience or the passage of time.

More literary and reflective than 感动 (moved) or 叹息 (sigh). Typically evoked by contemplating change, loss, or the vast sweep of time. Often followed by 万千 (a thousand feelings) or 不已 (endlessly). Common in essays, speeches, and literary writing.
