产物

Chinese HSK 7-9 Vocabulary Chinese ★★★ 3/5 neutral chǎn wù
Pinyin chǎn wù
Hanzi breakdown 产 = simplified 產 (to produce, give birth to); 物 = 牛 (ox) + 勿 (phonetic — original meaning: physical things)

Meaning

Product; outcome; result. Something that arises from a particular process, environment, or set of conditions.

Widely used in academic, intellectual, and cultural discourse to describe something as the result or byproduct of a historical period, social environment, ideology, or process. Often used metaphorically — 时代的产物 (a product of the times) is a very common phrasing. Less common for referring to literal manufactured goods, where 产品 is preferred.

Examples

  1. 这种极端民族主义是特定历史背景下的产物,并非天然存在于人类文化中。 This form of extreme nationalism is a product of a specific historical context, not something that exists naturally in human culture.
  2. 科层制度作为工业化时代的产物,在信息化社会中正面临深刻的结构性挑战。 Bureaucratic systems, as a product of the industrial age, are now facing deep structural challenges in the information society.
  3. 他的悲观主义并非天性使然,而是多年压抑经历的产物。 His pessimism is not a matter of innate character but rather the product of years of suppression and hardship.
