的话

Meaning

If; in case. A conditional particle placed at the end of a clause to express a hypothetical situation.

Often pairs with 如果 at the beginning of the clause, but can also be used alone. Softer and more conversational than using 如果 by itself. Very common in spoken Mandarin.

Examples

1. 你有时间的话，我们一起去看电影吧。 If you have time, let's go see a movie together.
2. 明天下雨的话，我们就不出去了。 If it rains tomorrow, we won't go out.
3. 你喜欢的话，可以多拿一些。 If you like them, you can take some more.

• 在正式的书面语中不常用'的话' — in formal written Chinese, use 如果...则... or 若...则... instead of 的话.
