一方面……另一方面…… (on one hand... on the other)
Meaning
The pattern '一方面……,另一方面……' presents two different aspects, reasons, or considerations of a situation. It is equivalent to 'on one hand... on the other hand...' in English and helps organize reasoning with multiple facets.
This pattern is commonly used in both spoken and written Chinese to weigh two sides of an issue, present complementary reasons, or describe a situation from multiple angles. The second clause is often introduced by 另一方面, though 另 is sometimes omitted in casual speech. Unlike in English where 'on the other hand' typically introduces a contrast, the Chinese pattern can present either contrasting points or complementary ones. It is frequently used in persuasive writing, discussions, and formal speech. The two clauses should ideally be parallel in structure. For more than two aspects, use 首先...其次...此外... instead.
