除非 (unless)
Meaning
The conjunction 除非 (chúfēi) means 'unless' or 'only if.' It introduces the one condition under which a stated result or situation would change. Without that condition being met, the default outcome remains as stated.
除非 is used to express that a certain result will hold true unless a specific condition is met. It can appear either before or after the main clause. When 除非 comes second, the structure is 'Result/Fact, 除非 + Condition,' meaning 'this is how it is, unless...' When 除非 comes first, the structure often pairs with 否则 or 不然 in the second clause. Learners frequently confuse 除非 with 除了, but they are quite different: 除了 means 'besides' or 'except for,' while 除非 means 'unless.' Another common mistake is using 除非 with 就, which contradicts the 'unless' logic — 除非 typically pairs with 才 (to show the condition is necessary) or with 否则/不然 (to show what happens if the condition is not met).

Origin & History
The word 除非 combines 除 (to exclude, to remove) and 非 (not, wrong), literally suggesting 'excluding the case where it is not so.' This double negative creates the meaning of 'only if' or 'unless,' a usage that became standard in vernacular Chinese.
