并(且) (and / moreover)
Meaning
并 or 并且 is a conjunction used to connect two verb phrases or clauses, indicating that both actions occur together or that the second action adds to the first. It is more formal than 和.
并且 connects two actions or states performed by the same subject, emphasizing that both are true or done simultaneously. It is more formal and literary than 和 or 而且. A key distinction: 而且 adds supplementary information (furthermore), while 并且 connects parallel actions of equal weight. 并 alone can also function as an adverb meaning 'actually' in negative sentences (并不/并没有), adding emphasis to negation. Learners often confuse 并且 with 而且 — 并且 stresses parallelism and co-occurrence, while 而且 stresses addition and escalation.
