呢 (modal particle)
含义
The modal particle 呢 (ne) is used at the end of a statement to indicate that an action is ongoing, to add emphasis, or to express a rhetorical or follow-up question tone. It can also be used to ask 'what about...?' when redirecting a question.
The particle 呢 has several related but distinct uses. First, it marks ongoing actions when combined with verbs: 他在看书呢 (he's reading right now). Second, it is used for reciprocal or follow-up questions: after someone answers a question, responding with 你呢? asks 'and you?' Third, it adds a sense of emphasis or mild assertion to statements, suggesting 'as a matter of fact' or 'you know.' Fourth, it appears in rhetorical questions to express surprise or challenge. Learners sometimes confuse 呢 with 吗, but 吗 creates yes/no questions while 呢 is used for follow-up questions, ongoing states, or emphasis. The particle 呢 never turns a statement into a simple yes/no question.
