Introduction

Education vocabulary expands significantly at N4 level. You'll encounter words for academic subjects, school activities, and the broader education system that go well beyond the classroom basics of N5.

These terms are particularly useful if you're studying in Japan or planning to take Japanese language exams.

  1. 教育 きょういく Education; schooling; training. The process of teaching or raising someone to develop knowledge and character.
  2. 研究 けんきゅう Research; study; investigation. Systematic inquiry into a subject to discover new facts or principles.
  3. 実験 じっけん Experiment; experimentation. A test carried out to verify a hypothesis or discover something new.
  4. 成績 せいせき Results; record; grades; marks. Academic or performance scores that measure achievement.
  5. 合格 ごうかく Passing an exam; pass; success. Meeting the required standard to be accepted.
  6. 不合格 ふごうかく Failure; rejection; disqualification. Not meeting the required standard on an exam or evaluation.
  7. 入学 にゅうがく Admission to a school; enrollment; matriculation. Entering a school as a new student.
  8. 受験 じゅけん Taking an examination, especially an entrance exam. The act of sitting for a test.
  9. 講義 こうぎ Lecture. A formal talk on a subject, especially at a university.
  10. 専門 せんもん Specialty; area of expertise; major field of study. A subject one focuses on professionally or academically.
  11. 論文 ろんぶん Thesis; essay; academic paper. A formal written work presenting research or arguments.
  12. 資料 しりょう Materials; data; documents; information. Reference materials used for study or work.
  13. 参考 さんこう Reference; consultation. Using information as a basis for judgment or decision-making.
  14. 暗記 あんき Memorization; learning by heart. Committing information to memory through repetition.
  15. 復習 ふくしゅう Review; revision. Going over previously learned material to reinforce understanding.
  16. 予習 よしゅう Preparation for a lesson; previewing material before class.
  17. 理解 りかい Understanding; comprehension. Grasping the meaning or significance of something.
  18. 発表 はっぴょう Announcement; presentation; publication. Making information known publicly or presenting findings.
  19. 出席 しゅっせき Attendance; presence. Being present at a class, meeting, or event.
  20. 欠席 けっせき Absence; non-attendance. Being absent from a class, meeting, or event.
  21. 知識 ちしき Knowledge; information. Facts, understanding, or skills acquired through study or experience.
  22. 技術 ぎじゅつ Technology; engineering; technique; skill. Practical methods or expertise in a particular field.
  23. てん Mark; score; grade; point; dot. A numerical score or a specific point of focus.
  24. 中学校 ちゅうがっこう Junior high school; middle school. The three-year compulsory education stage for ages 12-15.
  25. 小学校 しょうがっこう Elementary school; primary school. The first stage of compulsory education in Japan.
  26. 高校生 こうこうせい High school student.
