体言
Meaning
Substantive; noun-class word in Japanese grammar. Refers collectively to nouns, pronouns, and numerals that can function as the subject of a sentence.
A traditional Japanese grammatical term contrasting with 用言 (yōgen — predicates: verbs and adjectives). 体言 do not conjugate and can be directly followed by case-marking particles. 体言止め (taigen-dome) is a rhetorical technique ending a sentence or poem with a 体言, creating a sense of arrest or emphasis.

- 体言止めは和歌や俳句でよく使われる表現技法だ。 Ending a line with a substantive is a common expressive technique in waka and haiku.
- 日本語文法では名詞と代名詞を合わせて体言と呼ぶ。 In Japanese grammar, nouns and pronouns are collectively called substantives.
- 体言に直接接続できる助詞を体言接続の助詞という。 Particles that can directly follow a substantive are called substantive-connecting particles.
