Meaning

Dialect; regional variety of a language; vernacular. A form of a language with distinctive vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar specific to a geographic region.

Japan has a rich diversity of regional dialects, including 東北弁, 関西弁, 博多弁, 沖縄語 and many others. In literature, skilled use of dialect (方言文学) can powerfully convey regional identity, social class, and character. Linguists study dialect both for its own sake and for what it reveals about the history of the language. The prestige standard 共通語 (kyōtsūgo) coexists with regional dialects.

Examples

  1. 祖父が話す東北の方言が懐かしく、帰省するたびに耳に馴染んだ。 The Tōhoku dialect his grandfather spoke was full of nostalgia, and it felt familiar to his ears every time he went home.
  2. 小説の中で方言を巧みに使うことで、登場人物の個性と出自が際立つ。 The skilful use of dialect in a novel throws the individuality and origins of the characters into sharp relief.
  3. 方言の消滅は地域の文化的アイデンティティの喪失につながるという声が研究者から上がっている。 Researchers are raising the alarm that the disappearance of dialects leads to a loss of regional cultural identity.
