プロデュース
Meaning
To produce or oversee a creative project; in idol culture, the act of managing and shaping an idol or group's image, music, and career.
While borrowed from English 'produce,' プロデュース in Japanese entertainment carries a much broader meaning than its English counterpart. A producer (プロデューサー) doesn't just handle logistics — they shape the entire artistic vision, from song selection to visual concept to public persona. The word became iconic through Akimoto Yasushi's approach to AKB48 and Tsunku's work with Morning Musume. In gaming, the iDOLM@STER franchise popularized calling fans 'producers.'
