黒歴史
Meaning
Dark history — embarrassing past events, phases, or creations that someone desperately wants to forget.
Everyone has their 黒歴史: the cringeworthy poetry you wrote in middle school, the terrible fashion phase, the embarrassing social media posts. The term captures that particular flavour of retrospective cringe when you look back at something you once did seriously and want to erase it from existence. It's most commonly associated with 中二病 (chuunibyou) phases and teenage angst, but adults use it for any embarrassing past moment. The term is almost always used humorously and self-deprecatingly.
Examples
- 中二病時代のポエム、完全に黒歴史。 The poetry I wrote during my chuunibyou phase is total dark history.
- 黒歴史を掘り返すのやめてくれ。 Stop digging up my dark history, please.
- あの頃のSNS投稿、黒歴史すぎて全部消した。 My old social media posts were so cringy that I deleted all of them.
