Meaning
An expression meaning 'nothing more than' or 'merely.' It downplays the significance, amount, or degree of something, presenting it as less important or impressive than it might seem.
に過ぎない is used to minimize or reduce the perceived importance of something. It often appears when the speaker wants to counter an overestimation, express humility, or argue that something is trivial. The nuance is dismissive — whatever precedes に過ぎない is being labeled as insufficient, unimpressive, or merely what it is. This pattern is common in debates, essays, and formal discussions. It differs from だけ in that に過ぎない carries a stronger evaluative judgment — the speaker is actively downplaying, not just stating a limit. Learners may confuse it with すぎる (too much), which is the affirmative form and has the opposite nuance.
Examples
That is nothing more than a rumor.
What I said was merely stating the facts.
His success was nothing more than good luck.

Do Say

(Adding だけ before に過ぎない is redundant — both express limitation, so choose one) → それは噂に過ぎない。
