幽玄
意味
Yugen; an aesthetic ideal expressing subtle, profound, and mysterious beauty — a sense of the universe beyond what can be said in words.
A central concept in traditional Japanese aesthetics, particularly associated with Noh theatre and classical poetry. 幽玄 describes an experience of profound, shadowy beauty that hints at deeper meaning beneath the surface without revealing it fully. The concept was systematised by the Noh playwright and theorist Zeami Motokiyo (世阿弥元清) in the 14th–15th century. 幽玄 values restraint, suggestion, and depth over the explicit and ornamental. It remains one of the most discussed terms in Japanese literary and aesthetic theory.
