私小説
意味
The I-novel; a distinctly Japanese genre of autobiographical fiction in which the narrator closely corresponds to the author, often confessing personal experiences or inner conflicts.
The 私小説 (also read ししょうせつ/shishosetsu) emerged in the Meiji-Taisho era, heavily influenced by European naturalism. Unlike Western confessional literature, the Japanese 私小説 is distinguished by radical sincerity — the author writes about their own shameful, painful, or transgressive experiences with minimal fictional mediation. Key figures include Tayama Katai (田山花袋) and Kasai Zenzo (葛西善蔵). The genre has been both celebrated for its honesty and criticised for its narcissism and lack of social engagement, making it one of the most debated forms in Japanese literary history.
