ととのう
意味
To achieve a blissful, euphoric state through the sauna-cold water-rest cycle — the ultimate goal of Japanese sauna culture.
ととのう (written in hiragana, from 整う meaning 'to be in order/balanced') is the defining word of Japan's sauna boom. It describes the euphoric, almost transcendent feeling achieved after alternating between a hot sauna, cold water plunge (水風呂), and outdoor rest (外気浴), typically repeated for three sets. Physiologically, it involves the release of endorphins and the interplay of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The word was popularized by the manga サ道 and became so iconic that it was nominated for Japan's buzzword of the year.
