Almost exclusively used to describe positive or neutral things of great age: 历史悠久 (long history), 悠久的文明 (ancient civilisation), 悠久的传统 (age-old tradition). Not used for negative phenomena growing over time. Carries a tone of admiration and cultural pride. A near-synonym is 源远流长 (with deep roots and long flow — also implies continuous vitality).
