译
Meaning
To translate; to interpret. A literary/formal shorthand for 翻译, often appearing in compounds and formal written language.
As a standalone verb, 译 is more formal and literary than 翻译. Commonly appears in compounds: 译文 (translated text), 译者 (translator), 译注 (translator's note), 音译 (phonetic transliteration), 意译 (free translation), 直译 (literal translation). In publishing, 译 followed by a person's name indicates the translator of a work.
