咽喉
Meaning
Throat; pharynx and larynx. The narrow passage at the back of the mouth. Also used metaphorically to describe a critical bottleneck or strategic passage.
In medical use: 咽 = pharynx, 喉 = larynx; together they denote the throat region. Metaphorically, 咽喉要道 (throat passage) means a vital strategic corridor — a narrow mountain pass, a key transport hub, or an indispensable infrastructure node. Common in military history, geography, and infrastructure planning.
