杨树
Meaning
Poplar tree (Populus). A fast-growing deciduous tree with distinctive triangular or ovate leaves that tremble in the wind, widely planted across northern China.
One of the most common trees in northern China, planted extensively along roads, in parks, and on farmland windbreaks. Poplars are fast-growing and used for timber, paper pulp, and environmental protection. In spring, female poplar trees release abundant white cotton-like seed fluff (杨絮 — poplar catkins/fluff) that floats through the air, a familiar and often complained-about feature of Beijing springs.

- 北京每年四五月间,杨树漫天飞絮,细密的白色绒毛如同下雪一般覆盖街道和公园,对花粉过敏症患者造成了较大困扰。 Every year in April and May in Beijing, poplars release clouds of fluff; the fine white fibers cover streets and parks like snowfall, causing major trouble for people with pollen allergies.
- 杨树具有生长速度快、适应性强的特点,是中国北方防护林建设和荒漠化治理工程中最常用的造林树种之一。 Because poplars grow fast and adapt well, they are among the most commonly used trees in northern China for shelterbelt construction and anti-desertification projects.
