Meaning

To go to the countryside; to be sent to or visit rural areas. Describes the act of travelling from an urban area to a village or rural district, either by choice or as a government-directed assignment.

Has strong historical connotations related to the Down to the Countryside Movement during the Cultural Revolution (1968–1980), when urban educated youth were sent to rural areas for labour and re-education. In contemporary usage, it refers to government officials going to villages for fieldwork, rural tourism, or volunteer teaching programmes.
