Meaning

To mention two very different things in the same breath; to put on a par. Most often used negatively to argue that two things cannot or should not be equated.

A chengyu typically appearing in negative constructions (不能/不可/不宜相提并论) to emphasise that two things are too different in quality, scale, or nature to be fairly compared. Occasionally used positively when the comparison is valid.

Examples

  1. 业余爱好者与经过系统训练的专业运动员,在竞技水准上根本不可相提并论。 Amateurs and professionally trained athletes simply aren’t comparable in competitive level.
  2. 古代手工作坊与现代规模化工厂在生产效率方面相差悬殊,不能相提并论。 Ancient handcraft workshops and modern large-scale factories differ enormously in production efficiency and shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath.
  3. 这两位作家的文学风格迥异,不宜相提并论,各有其独特的艺术价值与历史贡献。 These two writers have completely different literary styles, so it’s not appropriate to put them on the same level; each has unique artistic value and historical contributions.

Do Say

  • 初级学员与资深研究员的学术贡献不可相提并论,两者所处的阶段截然不同。(The academic contributions of junior trainees and senior researchers cannot be mentioned in the same breath — the stages they are at are entirely different.)
  • 这两项政策的实施背景和目标受众截然不同,不宜相提并论,需分别加以评估。(The implementation contexts and target audiences of these two policies are entirely different; they should not be conflated — each must be assessed separately.)

Don't Say

  • 他们两人可以相提并论 — while grammatically possible, be specific about what dimension is being compared; vague usage weakens the argument; always specify the basis of comparison
