无形中

Chinese HSK 7-9 Vocabulary Chinese ★★ 2/5 neutral wú xíng zhōng

Hanzi breakdown 无形 = formless, imperceptible; 中 = 口 + 丨(a vertical stroke through the centre — middle, within)

Meaning

Imperceptibly; without conscious awareness; in an invisible, unnoticed manner. Used to describe how something happens gradually or without anyone realising it.

Very common in modern written Chinese. Frequently used to describe gradual change, habit formation, social influence, or unintended consequences. Slightly different from 无形 alone — 无形中 is specifically adverbial, modifying how an action or change occurs.
