Meaning
Scholar; man of letters; literati. A person devoted to literary and cultural pursuits, someone with refined literary education and sensibility.
In Chinese tradition, 文人 represents an idealized cultured intellectual who writes poetry, practises calligraphy, and embodies moral refinement. 文人画 (literati painting) is an important art genre. Often contrasted with 武人 (military men) or 商人 (merchants).
