山寨
Meaning
Originally a fortified mountain stronghold or village; in modern usage, a counterfeit, imitation, or knock-off product, or anything that mimics an original without authorisation.
Historical sense: mountain strongholds of bandits or rebel armies, as in Water Margin. Modern sense (widespread from the 2000s): cheap Chinese imitations of branded goods — 山寨手机 (knockoff phone), 山寨品牌 (copycat brand). Extended culturally to 山寨文化 (copycat culture) and 山寨春晚 (unofficial parody Spring Festival Gala). Can be critical or playfully ironic depending on context.
