Meaning

Just; precisely; contrary to what is expected or desired. Expresses an unexpected or contrary outcome, often with a sense of irony, frustration, or willful stubbornness.

偏偏 highlights a result or behaviour that goes against expectation, desire, or logic. It can express: (1) unfortunate coincidence, (2) stubborn contrary behaviour, or (3) ironic selection. Similar to 恰恰 but with a stronger sense of contrary willfulness or unfortunate timing.

Don't Say

  • 偏偏他很聪明 — when used positively without irony it sounds unnatural; use 恰恰 instead: 恰恰是他解决了这个难题
