Meaning

To study; to read books; to attend school. Refers to the activity of studying or being enrolled in school.

A colloquial but widely used expression. Can mean attending school (念书 = 上学) or actively studying/reading. 念了多少年书 (how many years of schooling). Often contrasted with 工作 (working). Do Say

  • 念书不是目的,而是手段;真正的教育应当培养学生独立思考的能力和对社会的责任感,而不仅仅是追求高分和文凭。(Studying is not an end in itself but a means; true education should cultivate students' capacity for independent thinking and their sense of social responsibility, not merely the pursuit of high grades and diplomas.)
