Meaning
To study; to read books; to attend school. Refers to the activity of studying or being enrolled in school.
A colloquial but widely used expression. Can mean attending school (念书 = 上学) or actively studying/reading. 念了多少年书 (how many years of schooling). Often contrasted with 工作 (working). In rural or historical contexts, 念书 can carry aspirational connotations — being able to study was considered a privilege.

Do Say
(In that era, being able to go to the city to study was a rare opportunity for rural children — many families would tighten their belts rather than deprive their children of completing middle school or even university.)
(Studying is not an end in itself but a means; true education should cultivate students' capacity for independent thinking and their sense of social responsibility, not merely the pursuit of high grades and diplomas.)
