Meaning

Outrageous; way out of line; absurd; going far beyond acceptable limits. A colloquial exclamation of disbelief.

A colloquial Beijing expression with a retroflex suffix (儿化). Describes prices, behaviour, or demands that are shockingly unreasonable. Widely used in informal spoken Chinese across mainland China, especially in complaints and exclamations. More emphatic than 过分 or 荒谬.

  1. 这家餐厅的菜价实在是太离谱儿了,普通炒菜竟要两百元。 The prices at this restaurant are absolutely outrageous—an ordinary stir-fry costs 200 yuan.

  • 在正式书面场合用离谱儿 — 该表达为口语俚语,正式场合应改用'不合情理'或'荒谬'
