分支
Meaning
Branch; offshoot; subdivision. A secondary line or division that stems from a main entity — used for organisations, academic fields, family lineages, rivers, or programming.
Versatile term used across many domains: an organisational branch, a version control branch (代码分支), a tributary river (河流分支), a phylogenetic branch (进化分支), or a subdivision of knowledge (学科分支). Neutral in tone. Different from 分部 (a regional administrative division) in that 分支 emphasises derivation from a common source.
