定论

Chinese HSK 7-9 Vocabulary Chinese ★★ 2/5 formal dìng lùn
Pinyin dìng lùn
Hanzi breakdown 定 = 宀 + 正 (to settle, finalize); 论 = 讠+ 仑 (to discuss, theory, conclusion)

Meaning

Definitive conclusion; established verdict. A conclusion that is considered final, settled, and not open to further debate or revision.

Most commonly appears in the negative: 尚无定论 (no definitive conclusion yet) or 难有定论 (hard to reach a final verdict). Used in academic, legal, historical, and scientific contexts to signal that a matter remains open or, conversely, has been conclusively resolved.

Examples

  1. 关于该事件的真实起因,学界至今尚无定论,各方仍在持续研究中。 As for the true cause of the incident, academia still has no definitive conclusion to this day, and research is ongoing.
  2. 这一理论是否成立,科学界还未能形成定论,有待更多实验证据支撑。 Whether this theory holds up, the scientific community has not yet reached a definitive conclusion, and more experimental evidence is needed.
  3. 历史上许多重大事件的是非功过难有定论,只能留待后人客观评价。 For many major historical events, it’s hard to reach a definitive verdict on what was right or wrong and what the merits and faults were; that can only be left to later generations to judge objectively.
