Introduction

Knowing health vocabulary is practical and important. N4 introduces words for common ailments, medical visits, and body-related terms that go beyond the basics.

These words are invaluable if you ever need to visit a doctor in Japan or describe how you're feeling to Japanese friends.

  1. 健康 けんこう Health; well-being. A fundamental word used to talk about physical and mental wellness.
  2. 体調 たいちょう Physical condition; state of health. Used to describe how someone is feeling physically.
  3. 症状 しょうじょう Symptoms; condition of a patient. Describes the signs or manifestations of an illness.
  4. 治療 ちりょう Medical treatment; care; therapy. The process of treating illness or injury.
  5. 手術 しゅじゅつ Surgery; operation; procedure. A medical operation performed on a patient.
  6. 入院 にゅういん Hospitalization; being admitted to hospital. The act of entering a hospital for treatment.
  7. 退院 たいいん Leaving hospital; discharge from hospital. The act of being released after treatment.
  8. 検査 けんさ Examination; inspection; test; check. A systematic check or medical test.
  9. 注射 ちゅうしゃ Injection; jab; shot. The act of administering medicine with a needle.

  11. ほね Bone. The hard tissue forming the skeleton of the body.
  12. 筋肉 きんにく Muscle. The tissue in the body responsible for movement and strength.
  13. 皮膚 ひふ Skin. The outer covering of the human body.
  14. Stomach. The organ that digests food.
  15. 心臓 しんぞう Heart. The organ that pumps blood through the body.
  16. 血圧 けつあつ Blood pressure. The force of blood pushing against artery walls.
  17. 体温 たいおん Body temperature. The internal temperature of the human body.
  18. 体重 たいじゅう Body weight. How much a person weighs.
  19. アレルギー アレルギー Allergy. An immune reaction to certain substances like food, pollen, or medicine.
  20. せき Cough; coughing. The reflexive action of expelling air from the lungs.
  21. 痛み いたみ Pain; ache; soreness. A physical or emotional sensation of discomfort.
  22. 怪我 けが Injury; wound. Physical harm or damage to the body.
  23. きず Wound; injury; cut; scratch; scar. Physical damage to the body or surface.
  24. 疲れる つかれる To get tired; to become fatigued; to grow weary. Describes the state of physical or mental exhaustion.
  25. 太る ふとる To put on weight; to gain weight; to grow fat. Describes the process of becoming heavier.
  26. 痩せる やせる To become thin; to lose weight; to slim down.
  27. 具合 ぐあい Condition; state; health. How something or someone is doing.
  28. うで Arm. The upper limb of the body from shoulder to hand.
  29. 背中 せなか Back (of the body). The rear surface of the torso.
