過密

Japanese Slang Japanese ★★★ 3/5 casual かみつkamitsu
Reading かみつ
Romaji kamitsu
Kanji breakdown 過 (excessive) + 密 (dense/packed) → excessively packed, i.e. overcrowded
Pronunciation /ka.mi.tsu/

Meaning

Overcrowded or too active — used for an online space, server, or chat that is overwhelmingly busy.

過密 (kamitsu) is the opposite of 過疎 (kaso). It originally means overpopulation or overcrowding and is used in internet slang to describe online spaces that are too active — servers crashing from too many users, chat scrolling too fast to read, or games with login queues. While being popular is positive, 過密 implies the activity has become a problem. In gaming, 過密サーバー (kamitsu sābā, overcrowded server) means lag and wait times. The term pairs naturally with 過疎 as two extremes of online community health.

Examples

  1. リリース直後で過密すぎてサーバー落ちた。 It was so overcrowded right after launch that the server crashed.
  2. チャット過密でコメント全然読めないじゃん。 The chat is so packed I can't read any of the comments.
  3. 過密鯖は避けて過疎鯖で始めた方がいいよ。 You're better off starting on a dead server instead of an overcrowded one.

Usage Guide

Context: gaming, online communities, Discord, streaming chat

Do Say
