屹立

Chinese HSK 7-9 Vocabulary Chinese ★★ 2/5 formal yì lì
Pinyin yì lì
Hanzi breakdown 屹 = 山 + 乞 (mountain + upright posture — a mountain standing firm); 立 = 大 + 一 (person + ground — standing upright)

Meaning

To stand tall and firm; to tower imposingly without yielding. Describes mountains, buildings, statues, or by extension people and institutions that stand with unyielding strength.

Primarily a written and literary verb. Used for physical structures such as 山峰屹立 and 纪念碑屹立, and metaphorically for organisations, nations, or individuals that have endured through hardship. The connotation is one of dignified, unshakeable permanence. Contrasts with 矗立 (to stand tall — more neutral, less emotionally charged).
