魂
Meaning
The soul; the spiritual essence of a person believed to leave the body at death. Also used figuratively to mean the essential spirit or core of something.
In traditional Chinese philosophy, every person possesses a 魂 (spiritual soul associated with the heavens and reason) and a 魄 (corporeal soul connected to the earth and instinct). 魂 appears in figurative expressions such as 国魂 (national spirit), 诗魂 (the soul of poetry), and 魂牵梦萦 (to be haunted by yearning). It is more archaic and literary than the modern standard term 灵魂.
