戈壁
Meaning
The Gobi Desert; a vast arid and semi-arid region spanning northern China and southern Mongolia, characterised by rocky plains, extreme temperatures, and sparse vegetation.
One of the largest deserts in Asia. 戈壁 (Mongolian: 'waterless place') is distinguished from sandy deserts by its rocky, gravel-covered terrain. Significant in Chinese history as part of the Silk Road and as a geopolitical buffer zone. Also used metaphorically to evoke desolation or resilience in literature and poetry.
