Meaning

That's all; nothing more; merely. A sentence-final particle that minimizes or downplays the preceding statement.

而已 is a classical-origin particle used to signal that the preceding statement is the full extent of the matter — nothing beyond this point. It conveys understatement, modesty, or dismissiveness. Equivalent to 罢了 in informal speech. Frequently co-occurs with 只是、不过、仅仅、无非.

  • 这项政策调整的初衷只是修正个别操作层面的问题而已,并非对整体战略框架的根本性重构。(The original intention of this policy adjustment was merely to correct individual operational-level issues — it is not a fundamental restructuring of the overall strategic framework.)

Don't Say

  • 他仅仅是说了一句话而已了 — 而已 is already a completive particle; adding 了 after it is redundant and grammatically incorrect; say 他仅仅说了一句话而已 or 他不过说了一句话
