Meaning
和 (hé) at the advanced level is used to connect two verbs or verb phrases, not just nouns. This usage indicates that the two actions are performed together or are closely related as a combined activity.
Beginning learners know 和 as a conjunction for nouns (咖啡和茶), but connecting verbs with 和 is a more advanced and sometimes restricted usage. Not all verb pairs can be joined with 和 — the verbs must represent actions that are logically connected, simultaneous, or part of the same activity. For example, 研究和分析 works because research and analysis naturally go together, but random unrelated verbs cannot simply be joined with 和. This usage is more common in formal or written Chinese. In casual speech, speakers more often use separate clauses or connectors like 也, 又, or 并. 和 between verbs often appears in set phrases, parallel structures, or when listing related activities in formal contexts.
