surety
含义: A person who takes responsibility for another's debt or obligation, or the money or bond pledged as a guarantee that someone will fulfil a legal requirement, such as appearing in court.
In English law, a surety may be required as a condition of bail: a third party pledges a sum of money that is forfeited if the defendant fails to attend court. The term also applies in commercial law, where a surety guarantees a debtor's obligations under a contract. Unlike a guarantor — who is liable only if the principal debtor defaults — a surety is jointly and severally liable with the debtor. The word can also mean certainty or confidence, as in the archaic phrase 'of a surety.' It collocates with 'bail,' 'bond,' 'stand,' and 'personal.'
