stalactite
A tapering formation that hangs from the ceiling of a cave, formed by the slow deposition of calcium carbonate from dripping mineral-rich water.
Stalactites grow extremely slowly, typically at a rate of less than a centimetre per century. They are often found alongside stalagmites (which grow upward from the floor). A useful mnemonic is that stalactites hold 'tight' to the ceiling, while stalagmites 'might' reach the ceiling. Spectacular stalactite formations can be seen in caves throughout Britain, including Cheddar Gorge in Somerset and Dan yr Ogof in Wales.
例句
- The cave was adorned with thousands of stalactites, some more than two metres long, glittering in the torchlight.
- Stalactites form as dissolved calcium carbonate in dripping water slowly crystallises on the cave ceiling.
- Visitors are warned not to touch the stalactites, as the oils from human skin can halt their growth.
