inundate
含义: To overwhelm with a great quantity of something, or literally to flood an area with water. Most commonly used figuratively to describe being swamped with requests, information, or work.
In modern usage, the figurative sense dominates — 'inundated with emails,' 'inundated with complaints.' It implies being overwhelmed to the point where normal function is impaired. The literal flooding sense survives in environmental and geographical writing. The passive construction 'to be inundated' is far more common than the active form.
