ellipse
含义: A regular oval shape formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane at an oblique angle, having two focal points.
An ellipse is a closed curve in which the sum of the distances from any point on the curve to two fixed points (the foci) remains constant. A circle is a special case of an ellipse where both foci coincide. Planetary orbits are elliptical, as described by Kepler's first law. Not to be confused with ellipsis, the punctuation mark.

From Greek elleipsis (a falling short, defect), from elleipein (to fall short). Named by Apollonius of Perga because the plane cuts the cone at an angle that 'falls short' of the base.
