An echocardiogram (often abbreviated to 'echo') is one of the most important non-invasive cardiac investigations. It can assess heart valve disease, heart failure, congenital heart defects, and the pumping efficiency of the heart (ejection fraction). Variants include transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), performed from the chest wall, and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), which provides more detailed images via a probe passed down the oesophagus.
