cytoplasm
The gel-like material within a living cell, excluding the nucleus, in which the organelles are suspended and most cellular processes occur.
Cytoplasm is the internal environment of the cell — everything between the cell membrane and the nuclear envelope. It consists of the cytosol (the aqueous fluid), organelles (mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, etc.), and various dissolved molecules. Most metabolic reactions take place in the cytoplasm, including glycolysis and protein synthesis. In prokaryotic cells, which lack a nucleus, the genetic material floats freely within the cytoplasm. The term is fundamental to cell biology and appears in every biology curriculum from GCSE level upwards.
例句
- The ribosomes floating freely in the cytoplasm are responsible for synthesising the proteins needed by the cell.
- Under the electron microscope, the cytoplasm appeared densely packed with mitochondria, indicating a high level of metabolic activity.
- In prokaryotic organisms, DNA is not enclosed within a nucleus but instead occupies a region of the cytoplasm called the nucleoid.
