consequential
含义: Having important results, effects, or implications; significant. In ethics, relating to consequentialism — the theory that the morality of an action is determined solely by its outcomes.
Consequential has two main uses. In general English, it means 'important and far-reaching' — a consequential decision is one with significant implications. In philosophy, consequentialism is the ethical theory that judges actions entirely by their results: a good action produces good consequences, regardless of the intention behind it. Utilitarianism is the best-known form of consequentialism. The word 'inconsequential' (trivial, unimportant) is its more commonly used opposite.
