Waiting on line
含义: Standing in a queue — New Yorkers say 'on line' where the rest of America says 'in line.'
This is one of the most distinctive and divisive features of New York City English. New Yorkers wait 'on' line, not 'in' line. 'I was on line at the deli for twenty minutes.' It's such a reliable NYC marker that linguists use it to identify New York speech patterns. The rest of the country says 'in line.'
